Brain hurricane—Encourages Students To Learn In Creative Manner

Reed Howard, who produced the concept of Brain Hurricane, did an intensive research before initiating this program. She started her career as a teacher in a small, poor school district in Bloomingdale, Michigan and has an experience of over 35 years in teaching. Brain Hurricane is a free tutoring program for the students from kindergarten to eighth grade which offers creative and innovative methods of learning to them.

Brain Hurricane conducted a survey in 2008-2009 which included 253 parents of students who studied in Chicago Public School System. This survey revealed that 68.7% of the parents believe that the tutoring program is liked by their children. 72.2% parents were so pleased with this program that they showed keen interest in signing up their child for this program again, 68.15% said that they would recommend this program to other parents as well, and 75% students said that they like the instructors at this tutoring program.

The curriculum developed contains all the relevant content and aligns with the national and state standards. It is designed while keeping the interest of students in mind and contains short fiction stories that are of interest to all age groups. Brain Hurricane encourages the students to learn in a creative manner and come up with new and innovative ideas. They are divided in teams which give rise to healthy competition among them and also make them learn the importance of teamwork as they have to solve their curriculum related problems with the help of their teammates.

The teaching methods adopted at this tutoring program are of the interest of students unlike those ordinary methods of lectures where the attention of students often drifts off. Each day is started by organizing various movement activities like the Multiplication Basketball, Spelling Jump Rope and many more. These activities help to make the students an active participant and inspire their interest in learning.
